Bad Moon Rising Book Discussion

What did you all think? Was it what you expected? Why or why not? Oh and how excited are you that Dev will be getting his own story?
SPOILERS AHEAD!
I LOVED this book! For so long I was wondering what exactly Fang had gone through when he was in a coma. That was a shocker, I felt so bad for Fang and understood his bitterness toward Vane. I also wanted a closer look at his relationship with Vane and an inside look at life with Anya.
There was so much history and new information in this book, I could hardly keep it all straight! I would have liked a "flashback scene" of exaclty how Aimee's two older brothers died. I thought it was interesting that there are at least two known Were's who are infused with godlike powers. Makes me wonder what role they will play in future books.
What I really loved was that while Fang and Aimee waited so long to have their story told, it wasn't ALL about them, their love story sort of took a back seat to the bigger issue of Thorn, The Peltiers and the entrance of other demons.
I am in shock over Lo and Aubert's deaths! That was something I hadn't expected at all. I actually started crying over it. I knew Lo would come around to Aimee and Fang's being mates but I didn't expect it to be as she was dying. I blame Savitar and his quick temper.
Remember, if you're going to include spoilers in your comments, please put "SPOILERS AHEAD" in the subject line so others won't be spoiled (unless they want to).

Spoilers ahoy...
Date: 2009-08-10 10:24 am (UTC)I'm still crying over Maman and Papa Bear's deaths. Didn't see that coming at all.
And damn Savitar for his quick temper. I mean did he learn NOTHING from Acheron's "dealings" with Nick when Nick slept with Simi. Don't act out of anger...the consequences are hell to deal with, regardless of whether they happen directly to you or not.
And HOLY HELL THE DAIMONS CAN WALK IN THE DAYLIGHT!!! WTF?!?!
Gods I love these books!!
Re: Spoilers ahoy...
Date: 2009-08-10 06:04 pm (UTC)I also know there were complaints about the additional demon chasers and such being too much for one book, well part of what attracted me to this series was the complexity of the story line. I love that the romance isn't the main point of the books. I love all the involvement of gods and goddesses.
And I STILL can't get over maman and papa bear. I wonder if Savitar will blame himself.
And did you see on Sherri's site that Dev will be getting his own story next year?
Re: Spoilers ahoy...
Date: 2009-08-10 08:21 pm (UTC)Exactly. I just thought that Fang and Aimee went back to when he and Vane were attacked by the Daimons and Vane brought them to Sanctuary. I had no idea they went back before that so it was interesting to see how they got started and how they dealt with the myriad of things between when they actually started and when we found out about them.
The other demon chasers...well, I will admit that, at times, I get a little irritated at how many different elements Sherry's bringing in at once. That's part of what ultimately turned me off of Laurell K. Hamilton. But, at the same time, I do like how the mythos of the Pyramid of Protection is growing. That facet of it is very intriguing. And I'm glad that Nick's status as the last Malachi wasn't just intro'd and forgotten. I like how that's gonna stick around for a while.
I, too, like how romance isn't the main point of the books. If that was the case, I doubt I'd be as emotionally invested in the series as I am. Plus, the inclusion and involvement of the gods and goddesses is fascinating, no matter what pantheon they come from. I've started learning more about the different pantheons, especially the Greek pantheon.
Maman had her moments where I didn't agree with what she did or her politics but I could always appreciate where she and Papa Bear were coming from. They both remind me of my Dad, especially Maman, so I literally cried myself to sleep over their deaths. What's more is that, up until this book, I really liked Savitar and, while I can understand his need to make sure the Weres didn't second guess him, I'm so furious at him right now. I mean I know he can't see the consequences of his actions until after he takes action but still. He's the one who's always bitching at Acheron about responsibility and all that bullshit and now look what he's done. He's responsible for Maman and Papa Bear's deaths and the downfall of one of the best known, most respected, and safest sanctuaries.
No I hadn't seen that! Awww Dev...I wonder how he'll take Maman and Papa's deaths.
(PS. I LOVE THAT ICON! Daniel and Vala are made of win!)
Re: Spoilers ahoy...
Date: 2009-08-10 08:36 pm (UTC)I wonder what will happen to Sanctuary now that it isn't going to be an "official" safehaven.
I'm curious about that whole bit about Aimee having goddess like powers. It's gotta be vital to a future storyline though.
Oh I'm a huge Stargate fan, I made icons some months back from some of the episodes, I gotta get back into that again, I have a bunch of episodes I haven't done.
Re: Spoilers ahoy...
Date: 2009-08-10 10:39 pm (UTC)I kind of get the feeling that the Peltiers with the help of all of Sanctuary's hodge-podge family will keep the place open. Like somebody pointed out, Dante has his Inferno club and he does a damn good job of keeping things neutral there without being an "official" safehaven. I hope they keep it open and that Dev and Remi get to kick more ass now that they don't have Savitar's rules to abide by.
I want to know more about Aimee's aristos powers. The Fates can't be happy that any Weres have god/goddess like powers. The Olympians can't be happy about that, either. I hope Aimee as an aristos will come back in a later book.
Hehe...I haven't found many DH fans who are also SG fans. Actually, I don't have any DH friends. I keep trying to spread the DH goodness but to no avail.
Re: Spoilers ahoy...
Date: 2009-08-10 10:59 pm (UTC)Oh aside from online I haven't met any DH fans or SG fans. It sucks to be me sometimes. I have no one to discuss them with in real life.
Re: Spoilers ahoy...
Date: 2009-08-11 09:26 am (UTC)I can't wait to find out how the Dark Hunters are going to fight the Daimons in the daylight. I don't see how they can manage it and, ultimately, that gives the Daimons the advantage.
Well, through LJ I've met a fair number of SG fans...but going to Dragon*Con every year helps that, too. I barely have anybody online to talk about the DH series with, let alone aside from online.
Spoilers Ahead
Date: 2009-08-10 10:11 pm (UTC)I had had my suspicions abotu Kyle being Arcadian simply because there are several throw-away mentions about him being human (in fact I think he's even described as being at college) in the day time and how he's too young to be able to do that if he was Katagaria; in Wren's story he was just learning to turn human at Kyle's age. From that I'd worked out that Papa Bear had to be Arcadian because Mama was the Ursulan Katagaria Regis so she couldn't be. It was nice to know I'd guessed right but I've got to admit that I hadn't guessed about any of the others!
It was nice to see the Peltiers fleshed out a bit; previously apart from Mama they seemed to lack some individual personalities. Remi was mean, Aimee was the girl, Kyle was the youngest and Dev has a tattoo like Artemis's mark because he thinks it's funny.
Unlike some reviews/responses I like the fact that Thorn is warning people away from Jaden. Thorn hunts demons and Jaden helps them so it's normal that they wouldn't get on. If a demon has bartered successfully with Jaden for protection then Jaden and Thorn will come into conflict. It's only Thorn's opinion that Jaden is not "good" - and even Ash warned Simi from bartering with Jaden and they're friends.
I think Savitar's behaviour is very much in character; remember he wiped out a whole branch of were-hunters because one of them annoyed him! As he sees the future after he has set it in motion, it's likely that he knew as soon as Aimee and Simi popped in to save Fang what would happen and if it's not what he wanted he would be a little peeved.
I was kind of put off by the bit at the end where they saw the (presumabley Spathi) Daimon in the sunshine at the end and everyone was like "ooh daimons can walk in the daylight - the dark hunters are going to get pwned!" rather than thinking this is something that the Dark Hunters need to know.
I like the idea of Dev having his own book if only as it should tell us more about the Peltiers but I want more Ash and the Dark Hunters!!
Re: Spoilers Ahead
Date: 2009-08-10 10:54 pm (UTC)I just love the complexity of these books and how each character is somehow connected to everyone else.
I can't wait for Dev and Nick's stories.
SPOILERY SPOILERS AHEAD!
Date: 2009-08-11 03:09 am (UTC)I liked how it mixed in scenes from the other books and we saw things from a different POV.
There were a few times towards the end where I had to put the book down and stop for a moment. Especially when the fight broke out at Sanctuary.
And Maman and Papa Bear! ;_; I BAWLED over that and how the whole family gathered to comfort each other then pulled Fang into the mix. <3
I can't wait for Dev's book now! And I think I want to go back to the beginning and read all the books again then write down the info since it gets confusing after awhile! Like past histories, who was mixed up with who and what, etc.
And as much as Savitar pissed me off, I still adore him. AND I WANT HIS BOOK NOW. He needs one. And Jaden, too, but mostly Savitar.
probably some spoilers
Date: 2009-08-11 02:08 pm (UTC)I loved the fact that it we saw parts other Dark Hunter related stories, that was a really good idea, but I feel like some dates should have been added in the book. I felt lost at some points because I didn't have a feel of the year or what actions were going on in the Dark Hunter world.
I also love how big Kenyon's world is getting! I know that I get confused sometimes with all of the characters and rules of the universe, but I have so much respect for Kenyon's dedication and imagination. It's like Harry Potter all over again. :p
I'm pretty much just babbling now because I have so much praise for this book but don't know how to get it all out. I loved their story, I loved the battles, I loved loved loved everything. Although, I really wanted some more information on what it means now that Fang and Aimee are mated since the whole inter-species relationship deal never really happened before.
So yeah, can't wait for the next novel! Although isn't the next one Nick's? BOO. Don't get me wrong, I would love to know more about the kid and whatnot, but I just another Dark Hunter novel. We haven't had a Dark Hunter story since...well Acheron.
And can I just say that I cried my eyes out when Maman et Papa died? Ugh, that was so painful! Even though Maman could be a major bitch at times, you couldn't help but understand her. D:

Date: 2009-08-24 05:12 am (UTC)Very good story, although it had it's, "ummm" moments. Like, what was up with the scene where the waitress is baiting Aimee, saying that Fang was after her and bringing women to his room. Did I accidently skip forward and miss why that was included in the story in the first place?
I like Thorn and the Hellchasers and all the rest, it was all fun. It did, as someone above mentioned, take away from Fang and Aimee's story, but I really didn't mind because I read BMR for all the fun extras more than I read it because I was interested in Fang and Aimee's story. I'm with you guys in being glad it's not all about the romance, though pure romance can be awesome sometimes too.

Date: 2009-08-26 05:33 am (UTC)I can't wait to hear what you think about the manga though!
